Ateneo de Manila completes a clean sweep of their first seven game after disposing of Far Eastern University, 69-49, in the second to the last playing date of the first round in the 74th University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Highly touted rookie recruit Kiefer Ravena flirted with his second double-double output after scoring 19 points with 9 rebounds. Greg Slaughter put up 15 points and 11 rebounds to his name, while Nico Salva tallied 10 points.
On the other end, RR Garcia was the only Tamaraw in double-figures with 15 points, while Russel Escoto and reigning Rookie of the Year Terrence Romeo each had 8 points on the losing end.
FEU slides down to third place with a 4-3 card to finish the round.
Meanwhile, University of Santo Tomas caught University of the Philippines on a bad day as they wrested an all-important 68-49 victory in the day’s curtain raiser.
Jeric Fortuna put up 16 points to lead all scorers. Melo Afuang added 13 points, while Karim Abdul marked 9 to his name in a bounce back win.
The Growling Tigers are now tied with De La Salle University, who they will face on Thursday at 3pm, in fourth place with an equal 3-3 mark.
UP, on the other hand, did not have a single scorer in double digits. Gelo Montecastro had 9 points, while Mike Silungan and Alinko Mbah had 8 and 7 respectively in their fourth loss in six outings. The Fighting Maroons will next face Adamson University in the day’s opening match at 1pm.
