For the first time ever, a tournament that pits the top Ulitmate squads from different universities will finally be held, as UP Diliman Ultimate Organization (UP DUO) brought together 11 different clubs that will vie for the first-ever University FrIXbee Championship.
Supported by Hygienix, Coppertone, Havaianas, and San Miguel Corporation, this event to be held on July 23 and 30 at the UP Diliman Sunken Garden aims to be the first tournament to be held on a yearly basis that determines the top Ultimate squads.
Host school UP Diliman is bracketed in Group A together with University of Santo Tomas, UP Los Baños, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, University of Asia and the Pacific, and Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
Rounding out the rest of the combatants in Group B are De La Salle University-Canlubang, De La Salle University-Manila, University of Makati, Ateneo de Manila University and Far Eastern University.
Using the WFDF Rules for Ultimate, teams will compete in a single-round robin elimination in July 23, with the top three squads from each group advancing into the knockout playoff rounds. The top team from each group will receive byes to the semi-final round as an incentive for topping the elimination round.
The lower ranked squads will then figure in a cross-over quarterfinal round where the second placed team in Group A faces the third place team in Group B, and the second placed team in Group B faces the third place team in Group A. The semi-final round features the top two teams facing the quarterfinal winners, then winners from both matches will vie for the top prize in a 80 minute-cap and 15 point cap match.
